From the Desk of John Schmitt

I’ve been making my way through the speaking circuit at Naperville’s Rotary clubs and in my talks I use the line, “the Chamber is the reflection of the business community.” The Chamber’s experienced the same challenges your businesses are facing. However, like you are hopefully experiencing in your businesses, we are pleased to have an influx of new positive energy, Members and involvement.

I don’t have the analytical tools to know if that is a sign that things are thawing and that our economy is on a path towards growth. However, the speakers at the Chamber’s 2010 Regional Economic Forecast do, and will give you the information you want to know at the breakfast event on Wednesday, October 21.

    Legislative News

The Naperville Area Chamber of Commerce's Legislative Committee will meet Monday, October 12, from 11:30 AM - 1:00 PM at Hotel Arista, 2139 CityGate Lane, in the second floor Santorini Room. Topics to be addressed are the upcoming Veto Session of the General Assembly and a financial update from Naperville City Manager, Doug Krieger.

The City of Naperville is projecting a $14.1 million deficit for the upcoming fiscal year. To reduce that amount, staff and City Council have discussed a number of potential revenue raisers, such as the institution of a home-rule sales tax, in addition to expense reductions. The City is required by statute to settle on their property tax levy in the upcoming weeks, so Monday's discussion is timely and important to all of Naperville's businesses, residents and visitors.

All Members are encouraged to attend and participate in Monday's informative discussion:

Utilizing Unique Methods to Acquire Effective Employees

Do you struggle with hiring decisions?

Smart business owners and hiring managers look not just at qualifications, but also at a potential new hire’s compatibility with the company’s culture…something that can be difficult to quantify. And with an overabundance of talented people looking for work these days, it’s easy to be left scratching your head in confusion.

The NACC Speakers Bureau wants to help you figure out what your next new employee really offers your business. Leadership expert Rick Lochner and handwriting analyst Dale Roberts will share their unique methods for evaluating potential new hires. You’ll learn to assess how people think and the precursors to how they behave. You’ll also learn that a signature offers amazing insight into a person – which you can immediately put to use in your hiring decisions. You’ll even get a complimentary assessment, to see firsthand the power of these tools.

Join us Friday, October 30 as we kick off our 5th Fridays Speakers Bureau presentation series! Tickets for this event are just $25 for Members and $35 for Non-Members, and will include breakfast!
